Envitia At Geomob

9 October 2018

Last month Envitia attended Geomob, held at the Geovation Hub in London’s Clerkenwell. This particular meetup was one of the many events taking place as part of the UK Mapping Festival 2018, a week long series of events celebrating the great diversity of geo-projects happening in the UK. Geomob prides itself on driving the “geoinnovation” community by providing a democratic approach that incorporates start-ups, both new and established players in this industry, and a wide variety of speakers and projects.

Our CTO Gary Gale represented Envitia on this occasion. Gary has regularly attended and spoken in the past, this occasion was no different and he had this to say:

“I was proud to take part as I was there at the very first one and spoke about things which don’t exist anymore. At Geomob there is always something eye opening, there is always something so left field, and you always learn something.”

Gary presented an open source and open data project that he has been working on for some years, Who’s On First. By giving this talk on the gazetteer (a phone book of places rather than people), he became the all time most frequent speaker at Geomob and there was reward with Gary receiving the audience award for the best talk of the night. “What an honour to get this award and in this community. To get that kind of validation was amazing as I have seen some brilliant talks over the years so to be up there with those is a proud moment.”

We can safely say that we are all extremely proud of Gary’s achievement here at Envitia and in addition, proud to be represented at Geomob, an event that achieves such diversity and community in an ever-changing, ever-evolving industry.
